Reference Photos & Drawing Process:

Describe: This piece was made with graphite. It has two hands and two moons that mirror each other. The background is completely dark to make the moons stand out in contrast. The hands are placed in the bottom left corner and top right corner, holding the mirrored moons. There is shading on the hands as well to make then stand out against the background, but not so much that they over power the moons. The moons appear to be sleeping.
Analyze: The title is influenced by the pairs in the drawing. The pattern of twos is shown throughout with the two moons and two hands. The reference of “Head of a Young Woman” by Leonardo da Vinci was used to help with shaping the nose and closed eyes. Other reference photos were used to help shape the hands and get the thin shape of the moon. Emphasis is used in this drawing to show the importance of the moons, by having them be the brightest space in the drawing. There is balance with the mirroring of the hands and moons. The proportions of the hands and the moons are also important because they are supposed to mirror each other. Space was also considered by having the moons in the center, with the hands coming out of the corners.
Interpretation: This piece represents how people can take comfort in the moon at night. Surrounded by the darkness, the moon shines bright, reminding people to always look to the light in the dark. The hands are reaching towards the moons, the light, to show that people will be drawn towards the light in the dark. Furthermore, the hands, or people, reach towards the moon, or hope when there are tough times in life. This piece’s overall meaning is that people should always look for the good in bad situations.
Judgement: This piece taught me that it is very easy for graphite to spread in places that I didn’t want it to. Countless times it spread on the moons, making them darker, when I wanted them to be light. This piece also showed me that a dark background can hurt your work when there is not a lot of light in the drawing. While I liked having a dark background, I think it over powers the drawing a bit because there is not much light space in the foreground. However, I do like how the hands and moons mirror each other. Even though the replicas aren’t exact, I think the concept of mirroring is interesting, showing the importance of duplicity. If I were to recreate this drawing, I would add lighter space in the work and possibly do this by adding a sun.
