Drawing 1 Typography Project

Describe: - In this typography piece, there are various styles of fonts place upon hills at the bottom of the page. The medium choice is charcoal pencil. The word, “run”, is stylized in a font called, Alina Light, that is curvy and clean. The word “for” uses a difference in weight of the line to create boldness for even a word that isn’t a main part of the sentence. The word, “those”, is bolded and outlined to make it bubbled and pop off the page. There are smaller horizontal lines that connect to the word making the letters bigger and show the outline of the sides. The word, “hills”, started in a font that was retro and formed into a sort of font of my own that I came up with. I am sure there are similar fonts out there to this, but I changed it from what I was using as the original reference. The word, “babe”, also took reference from the different line weights, but became more of a bolder word as a whole. There are four dipping hills on the bottom that the words “hills babe” sit across and move with. Small details of grass patches scatter the hills.
Analyze: This typography piece incorporates the use of movement of eye flow across the page. The viewer’s eyes can easily flow from the top of that page to the bottom and move with the curving “hills babe” that sits across hills at the bottom of the page. Line shape and variety are heavily used in this piece because of the variations in their sizes and shapes, from the curving of run to the bolder line use in the words “for” and “babe”. Horizontal line use is also found in the side outline of the word “those”. There is balance in this piece because the words are spaced out to have similar weights on each side of the page. The bolder and more intense words at the bottom of the page, “hills babe”, contrast the hills that they sit on, which give off the perception of a more sweet or innocent setting. The element of texture was lightly used in the grass on the hills, to add more interest to the drawing, rather than just leaving it blank.
Interpretation: The inspiration for this typography project came from singer/songwriter, Tom Rosenthal. In the past I have used him for other projects as a main concept. The lyric “run for those hills babe” come from his song that is titled, “run for those hills babe”. I have liked this song, and a lot of the music he creates for a while. I thought that this song in particular, could have an interesting translation into artwork. This song is on his album, “Bolu”, which came out in 2015, and was produced by Max Brodie. Most of the music Tom Rosenthal creates is composed by him alone, including this song.
Judgement: Throughout the experience of doing this piece, I am happy with the way it turned out. There were times when I questioned the medium that I was using because charcoal pencils can be messy and somewhat hard to work with. I definitely smeared the black a few times, but all in all I am happy that I tried out this medium. I didn’t want to use pen because I wanted bolder letters without having to go over them many times, but I also didn’t want to use color pencil or graphite because I wanted something darker. Using charcoal pencils gave me a good in between. If I could go back and do it again, I would go slower so that I could make some of the letters cleaner and darker. All in all, I am pretty happy with the way it turned out, I just wish it could have been a bit cleaner.
